The movement for church extension, rendered necessary by the increase of our population, is assuming practical shape. A meeting of the Roman Catholic body takes place this evening, in the Court Honse, with a view to the erection of a chapel and residence for the clergyman. Designs for the erection of new places of worship in connection with the Church of England and the Wesleyan Church are also now under consideration. By the General Government Gazette of the SBth ultimo., the " Execution of Criminals Act, 1858," is proclaimed to come into operation in this Province, and the Dunedin gaol is declared to he ft place for the execution of criminals. By the Gazette of the 28th ult. we observe that the Governor has notified his intention of accepting the services of two companies of volunteers In this province, under the new regulations.
