ACCIDENT AT THE WEST TAIERI.
On Sunday morning about nine o'clock, a man named Hughes was crossing the Taieri River, with a horse and dray, in which were three other men, when as they approached the opposite bank the dray capsized, and before assistance could be rendered the horse was lost. The men in the dray had a narrow escape of their lives, iDdeed if one of them had not been a good swimmer, they mustallhave been drowned. This man succeeded in extricating theothers from beneath the dray. The three miners lost their swags, and the driver Hughes lost his coat, which contained two gold receipts of the Bank of New Zealand—Waipori one for 24 ozs., and the other for 12 ozs. ; also, two one pound notes. The river was very high, and the current strong in consequence of the recent rains. This accident affords another instance of the urgent necessity foi a punt on this river. We understand that it is the intention of the Government to have the river bank cut away at once, so as to make the crossing easier and less dangerous.
