ADVENTURE OF A SPY IN THE CONFEDERATE CAMP.

In a series of war sketches l>y a Northern Ranger, published in a New York paper, the following thrilling adventure of a spy in the Confederate lines is related :—

I have lately returned from tho South, but my exact whereabouts in that region, for obvious reasons, it would not be politic to state. Suspected of being a Northerner, it was often to my advantage to court obscurity. Known ns s[iy, a " short shrift" and a ready rope would have prevented the blotting of this paper. Hanging, disguised on tiie outskirts of a camp, mixing with its idlers, laughing at their jokes, examining their arms, counting their numbers, endeavouring to discover the plans of leaders, listening to this party and pursuing that, in the chorus of a rebel, song, betting on rebel success, cursing abolitionism, reviling Lincoln, traducing Scott, extolling Beauregard, despising Northern lighters, laughing at their tactics and sneering at their weapons, praising the beauty of Southern belles, and decrying that of Northern, calling-New York a. den of cut-throats, and New Orleans a paradise of immaculate chivalry, is but a small portion of the practice of my profession as a spy. This may not seem honourable nor desirable. As to the honour, let the country that benefits by the investigations and warnings of the spy be judge ; and the danger often incurred is more serious and personal than that of the battle-fieid, which may, perhaps, detract from its desirability.

It was a dark night—not a star on the glimmer. I had collected my quotum of intelligence, and was on the move for the Northern lines. I was approaching the banks of a stream whose waters *I had to cross, and then had some miles to traverse before I could reach the picket of our gallant troops. A, feeling of uneasiness began to creep over me ; I was on the outskirts of a wood fringing the dark waters at my feet, whose presence could scarcely be detected but for their sullen murmurs as they rushed through the gloom. I walked forty or iifty yards along the i bank. I then crept on all tours along the ground and groped with my hands. I "paused—l groped again ; my breath thickened, perspiration oozed j from me at every pore, and I was prostrated with j horror. I had missed my landmark, and knew! not where I was. Below or above, beneath (he j shelter of the bank, lay the skiff I had Hidden len days before, when I commenced my operations among the followers of JefF. Davis. As I stood gasping for breath, with all the umnistakeabic proofs of my calling about me, the sudden cry of bird or plunging of a' fish would act like magnetism on my frame, not wont to shudder at a shadow. No matter how pressing the danger may be, if a maii sees an opening for escape he breathes I with freedom. But let him lie surrounded by 'darkness,"impenetrable "at two yards' distance, within a mile's length of concealed foes, for what: knowledge has he to the contrary ; knowing too. with painful accuracy, the detection of his presence would reward him with a sudden nud violent death, and if he breathes no faster, and feels his limbs as free and Ms spirits as light as when taking a favorite promenade, he is more fitted for a hero than I am. In the agony of that moment—in the sudden and utter helplessness i felt to discover my true bearings—l was about to let myself gently into the stream and .breast its current for life or ilentli. There was no alternative. The Northern pickets must be reached in safety before the morning broke, or I should soon swing between heaven and earth from sonic green limb of the black forest in which I stood. At that moment the low sullen bay of the bloodhound struck my ear. The sound was reviving; the fearful stillness broken. The uncertain dread fled before the certain danger. I was standing to my middle in the shallow bed of the river, j as! beneath jutting banks. After the pause, a few seconds, I began to creep, mechanically and stealthily, down the stream, followed, as Iknew, from the rustling of the grass and frequent breaking of twigs, by the insatiable brute, although, b}' certain uneasy growls, he was at fault. Something struck ugaiust my breast. I could not prevent a slight cry escaping me as, stretching out my hands, I grasped the gunwale of a boat moored beneath (he bank. Between surprise and joy I felt half.choked. In an instant I had scrambled on board and began searching for the painter in the bow, in order to cast her from her fastenings. Suddenly a bright ray of moonlight— the first gleam of hope in that black night—fell directly on the spot, revealingthe silvery stream, my own skilf, hidden there ten days before, lighting the deep shadows of the verging wood, and on the log half buried in the bank, from which I had that instant cast the line that had bound me to it, the supple form of the crouching bloodhound, his red eyes gleaming in the moonlight, jaws distended, and poising for the spring. With an oar I aimed a blow at his head, which, however, he eluded with ease. In the effort flius made the boat careened over towards my antagonist, who made a desperate eilbrt to get his paws over the side, at the same time seizing hold of the gunwale with his teeth. Now or never was my time to get rid of the accursed brute. I drew my revolver and placed the muzzle between 1113 two eyes, but hesitated to fire, for that one report might bring on me a volley from the shore. Meanwhile the strength of the dog carreened the frail craft co muclr^liat the water rushed over the side, threatening to swamp her. I changed my tactics, threw my revolver into the bottom of the skiff, and grasped my "bowie," keen as a Malay creese, and glittering, as I released it from the sheath! like the moonbeams on the stream. In an instant I had severed the sinewy throat of the hound, cutting through brawn and muscle to the nape of the neck. The tenacious wretch gave a convulsive leap half out of the water, then sank, and was gone. Five minutes' pulling landed me on the other side of the river, and in an hour, without further accident, I was among friends, encompassed by the Northern lines. That night I related at head quarters tiie intelligence I had gathered, and in a few days shall again be gleaning knowledge in the Southern camp.

A BRITISH VESSEL DESTROYED BY PRIVATEERS. (From the New York Tribune.)

I I will now relate the substance of a statement j made to me, as I was about leaving Weldon, by a sailor named Henry Ross, of Liverpool, England. He accosted me with the inquiry if I was not a British subject, saying that he had an important matter to communicate to some trusty person who could lay it before a British Consul. Having satisfied himself of my ability to do so. lie wen* on to say that he was impressed on the 24th of July, by Cuplain Lewis, oV the pirate Speed, mounting a thirty-two pounder and two smaller guns, and with a crew of twenty-three men, well untied, lie was to serve as gunner. On the afteruoon of July 31, being oil" the coast, near Niig's Head, the cuptain observed a vessel, and, giving chase, soon overhauled her, and fired a shot across her bow, upiui which she immediately ran. up a British flag, her men crowding the deck, apparently in great surprise. The captain of the Sliced, who was intoxicated, burst out into a torrent of frightful oaths, and swore that hoisting that liag was only a "Yankee trick," that hi knew she was a Boston ship, and he was not to be fooled by that dodge any more. He ordered Rows to load the gun with grape and send tlid ii— Yankees to hell, which Jlos - refused to <!o, declaring that he would not lire upo.i his country's flag. At this the captain became violently enraged, and drawing a revolver, discharged it at him, one shot takiiiL- oitVcfc and wuunded him, but not dangerously. He was then ironed, and taken below. The gun, heavily loaded with grape shut, was fired upon tho ship with murderous eiieet, as it sccins, killing the captain mid four of his crew. Upon boarding, which was done niter a bloody resistance, Cuptain Lewis discovered that he had made an irretrievable mistake, and that his prize was milly a British vessel, with a cargo of cofiee. After a 'nasty consultation, it was resolved to carry the thing through with a high hand, and destroy ail proofs of the transaction by despatching the remainder of the crew. The .ship was relieved of her cargo and burned. Mr. Ross, who, it appears was to be shot next morning, was released that uiiiht by one Henry Sullivan, of New York, who was also impressed at the time with him , and made his escape. This story was related to me in a very earnest and s-incc! c. manner by Mr. Ross, who seems quite intelligent. ; and in no particular was his account of this shocking transaction contradicted. I examined him as rigidly and cautiously as I would a witness in court in a case of the greatest importance. I base no reason to question its truth, fur it only corroborates what I have heard before. Ru:ss is on his way north, and will doubtless soon lay the matter before the proper authorities. , A VOICE FROM SOUTH AFRICA AS TO PLEURO-PNEUMONIA. A correspondent writes the following to the S. M. Herald:— " Having repeatedly seen in the Australian papers the ravages, that scourge amongst cattle, the pleuro-pneumonia, has been, and still is committing ; and having also seen a report in the Melbourne papers wherein it is stated that the disease has bafned all attempts at cure, I will not allow any further time to elapse without communicating' to the stockholders of your colony the 'perfectly' successful cure we have discovered in this colony for that dreadful disease ; and although [ do not claim to have been the first discoverer of it, still I was, I believe, the first ■who tried it and proved its eilicacy. The cure is simply by inoculating every head of cattle on the farm, with the diseased lung of the lirstanimalllwt has either died of it, or (having evidently the disease) has been killed for ir. Various m.>ies of inocnla'ion have bee., adopted ; the first time it showed itself in my herd I lost IGO cows and heifers, when I had all the cattle driven into the yard, and with a sharp-pointed penknife punctured the skin at the very point of (he tail till I saw blood, the point of"the penknife being well moistened with

' the matter' of tho diseased lung. The disease instantaneously stopped ; and although L lost one or two after that, it was owing entirely to the enormous size they had swelled, particularly at ihe root of the tail and all about the rump, co-.i-pletely preventing the animal from dunging. Whenever this happens now we make an incision, and by fomenting prevent all fatal consequences. Some of the inoculated cattle lose their tails, and some only the points, whilst the great majority don't appear to suSer at all. Two years ago the disease broke out again in my herd, and several had it before I was aware of it ; but the moment [ inoculated it stopped. A few months ago it appeared again amongst some oxen I purchased, but by inoculating all on the farm there was an immediate end of it. Then, diseased oxen had been running with my herd of cattle for a considerable time, and not a single animal that was inoculated two years ago caught it ; only two or three I had since then purchased got affected. In short, the efficacy of inoculating is as much believed in amongst the stockholders in the colony, as vaccination for the small-pox. It is no uncommon thing, at a sale, for the auctioneer to warrant the oxen to have been inoculated to enhance their value.

" I have the honor to be, your obedient servant, P. vL. Clokte.

Scotch Lamji.okds.—lt is worthy of romurk that many of those who rent the shooting and deer-slal.'dntr mountains and forests, just because they cim aii'ord to jjive the highest price, are tradesmen from London, manufacturers from Leeds and Manchester, and warehousemen from Glasgow, Tl.e ancient and historical finniliesare dying out. Lord Fyfe for instance, with a rental, oi £50.000, has not mi income of £4000 Inverciiuid. with a rental of Xl-i,ooo,lms not a larger revenue Other lairds and chiefs may he found in Canada — successful tradesmen occupy the seats of their ancestors. The money power is rising like an advancing tide, and rapidly washing- away the vestiges of other days. Whether for good or evil it is hard to say. Prohahly it is desirable that rank without property, and thereby unable to hold its own or fulfil its duties, should disappear, and that out of the common stock shoot up those who shall improve by their being transplanted into a more elevated pln-;e, and in due time fulfil obligations which would otherwise have been neglected and forgotten.

INTKRBSTINO TO Voj-UNTKEItS.—Two most ingenious inventions in connection with the rifle have been registered by Mr Blanch, of tin's town. Tlmy consist of a new muzzle stopper and sight protector; l)iir, i)i the addition to the ordinary use of such articles, several essential requisites for the use of riflemen in the fli'W are most ingeniously worked in, so that without occupying any more space, or adding in any way to Hie weight of the rifle, a vohm/eerv/ill be prepared for almost any casualty incidental to shouting. The muz/.le stopper, if we understand it rightly, besides bavins a pricker, primer, and ball drawer, can be use:! as a groove protector in loading Dnil cleaning. Wit hoist in any way depreciating llu; other part ofth" invention, wo certainly consider the groove protector v most useful thing; for ail riflemen know how imporwibli! it is to obtain accurate shooting out of a rifle barrel worn at the muzzle. With respect to the " Übinch sight protector," its novelty and originality are very striking, and it, bus evidently been got up with great thought and care. To combine a nipple wrench and turnscivw with a sight shade and protector is about the last combination we should have thought possible, Jmt it hns been worked out in this instance into a practical and convenient form, — Victorian paper.
