DREADFUL AND FATAL ACCIDENT WITH A GUN.
Intelligence has reached us, of a dreadful accident at the Tairi Ferry, caused by the unexpected going off of a gun, whereby a poor fellow was Hurried into the presence of his Maker, with scarce a moment's warning. The driver of a dray, filled with swags, was unloading at the Tairi Ferry. One of the swags had a gun tied up in it. He pulled the package towards him, with his hand covering the muzzle. The lock must have caught in something, the gun was loaded and went off, the charge shattering the man's hand and arm in a frightful manner, and passing into his right side. Two of his fingers were blown away. Medical assistance was sent for, but in a very short while the man breathed his last. We do not envy the feelings of the owner of the gun, who by his carelessness, in putting a loaded gun into a dray, with a lot of other packages, caused the death of a follow creature. If he had a spark of humanity, he must almost have envied the victim to his carelessness.
