HAWKE'S BAY.
Owing to the pressing necessity that exists for arrrnging the disputes hetwecn tlie settlers and ji-itives of the Hawke's Bay district, we hear tliat the lion. Mr. Ward has left Auckland for Napier in JJ.M.S.S. Fawni for this purpose. The difficulties alluded to have .arisen from the trespassing of the settlers' cattle on the native lands. Hitherto the leasing of native lands ' has been forbidden, while the settlers in. the Hawke's Bay district have been so cramped for land that it hns been a matter of impossibility to prevent their cattle trespassing on the lands of the Mnories. We hear that it is the intention of the Government to induce the natives themselves to frame regulations for leasing their lands, defining trespass, and imposing penalties. The necessary powers have been alread}' granted to tbe Government by the Native Land Pur-, chase Ordinance, and it is hoped that the natives will accept these proposals for finally settling tue trespass question. Should Mr. Ward succeed in his undertaking, it is probable that he will visit the Wairampa district for a similar purpose.— Lyttelton Times, Jan. 1.
