POST OFFICE AGAIN.
To the Editor of the Otago Daily Times. Provincial Hotel, Dunedin, December 24, 1861. Sir,—l have been much annoyed and inconvenienced by either the carelessness or inefficiency of the Post Office department in this City, a letter addressed to the undersigned having- only reached me this day (and then only by accident) bearing the Dunedin post mark of the ninth inst. I had previously called on three different days, feeling sure that some communication was in existence, proof of which I have just received. Surely some arrangements can be effected to avoid such serious errors, which I believe to be a very common occurrence to applicants for letters.—l am, Sir, Yours respectfully, Henry Bayliss.
Old Bendigo.—lt is complained at Sandhurst that last week was one of the worst for a long time past for the gold buyers, the quantity offered being much below the usual average. The returns obtained by the large companies are falling off, and little assistance in maintaining the yield of the district is now to be looked for from the puddlers and other workers in alluvial ground, as water is becoming more scarce each week. A countryman giving his evidence in court, was asked by the counsel if he was born in wedlock. * No, Sir/ he replied, * I was born in Scotland.'
