THE Otago Daily Times. " Invertiam viam aut faciam." TUESDAY, DECEMBER 10, 1861.

"The little game" of some of the opposition members is becoming more apparent every day. Nothing will content them but a dissolution and a general.election before the new comers obtain the franchise, and in two years, j according to Mr. Dick, they will be patriotic 'enough to resign. Meanwhile, Air. Harris will be prevented from contesting the Superinten'dentship, and the new comers from having a voice in the government of the Province, •whilst a small clique will partition amongst j themselves the sweets of office, with Mr Dick (as Superintendent. It is to be hoped that every constitutional resistance will be offered to this neat little political conspiracy. In March the newcomers will be registered, and as the next ordinary session of the House does not commence until April, nothing will be gained by forcing on a premature election. | Under any circumstances, a provisional 'Executive will have to be formed, and a reference made to the General Government. We should counsel his Honor to accept an Executive from the government side of the Council, since the opposition decline the task. Should! the Council refuse its confidence, the mere! formal business before the house can be got through by mutual consent, and the matter be referred to the general government. The issue is plain, theopposition desires an immediate dissolution, the Superintendent recommends that the same be postponed till after the new comers are qualified to vote. However obstructive the general government may feel disposed to be, the precedednt of encouraging movements of the present kind will be so obviously injurious that the nature of tho decision is not doubtful.

We.omit our usual loader to make way for .Melbourne news, by the " Aldingti," which reached us only at 10 o'clock last night. ■

I Tile Diggings.—-Vfc understand "n- new gully ! has been opened on Wethers tone's, the prospects from which arc very promising. Six ounces, wo We told, were washed oilt of one dishful of stuff", ■ and the remaining wash-dirt in the bottom looked very rich. We have to-day the melancholy task of announcing two rather sudden deaths within the iliist few days. The first, a man of the name of Joseph I3rown, came in'o town from the Diy;g'uigs on Friday evening" to obtain medical advice, a v"sd on Sunday morning he suddenly expired. JThe cause of his death was, we believe, congestion of the iungs. tStrangs to say, the other ifie;ith (that of a man of the name of George j Wolf,-who arrived in town on Sunday evening, and died on Monday morning) was from the I same cause.
