COMMERCIAL.
No alteration of moment has taken place in the state of our market since our last review. The uncertainty existing respecting the bona fide character of the various new rushes lias caused the storekeepers on the diggings to hold off purchasing, except for immediate use. Ale in bulk is still .scarce, and sales are effected at full rates. Flour cannot maintain its present price—large stocks are in the warehouses, and in the face of the recent fall in the Adelaide market, prices here must follow the' downward tendency. Candles also are in excess of demand, and exhibit a depreciation. In butter the market is affected by the' quantity of inferior samples sent by the Melbourne shippers, most of which, if not entirely unsaleable, can only be moved at a nominal price. There is still a scarcity of spirits—brandy more particularly. Sugars are Very low, and several cargoes are expected from the Mauritius.
Messrs. Turnbull, Bing & Co. held a sale at their auction rooms yesterday, on account of Messrs. Clcvc & Co., of tea, sugar, spirits, &c. The sale was only thinly attended, on account of the merchants being-engaged with the mail from Melbourne, so little time being afforded them for getting their letters ready for the " Aldinga," the mail for Melbourne closing to-day. The following arc the prices obtained for the principal items : — Case whisk}1-, 14s. 9d. ; bulk do., ss. 6d. ; sherry, qr.-casks, 12s. ; geneva, IBs. and 19s/; tea, in 13----lb. boxes, 30s. per box ; port wine, qr. cask, lls. ; half-chests tea, "Great Britain," £4 10s. ; wax vestas, 17s. to 20s. ; Cossiporo sugar, T^cl. ; Cork butter, lOd. and lid. per lb.
