SOUTH SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The Oamaru iSouth School Committee held its monthly meeting last night, there being present: Mr T. Calder (in the chair). Messrs A. E. Lawrence. MeNarry. T. Hunter, and R. C. Main (secretary). The headmaster's report stated: "I
have to report that owing to the prevalance of measles and mumps the attendance for some weeks past has been far from satisfactory. The average for the rjnarter ending September was 449, out of an average roll number of 515. an unusually low percentage. The present roll number is 527. Enclosed herein is .1 copy of the inspectors' report ou the annual examination of the school. Mr Rodger, the Bpard's architect, accompanied by Mr Wallace. Chairman of the Board, paid a visit to the school last week to give final instructions in respect to the improvements that are. being effected in connection with the infant-room and play-sheds. In connection with the visit of the Band to Duuedin. I have to inform the Committee that the heartiest of welcomes was extended to tlie boys on th»ir arrival in Dunedin. Mr Main, secretary of the Albion Street School Committee, in the unavoidable absence of Mr Rennie. attended to the billeting arrangements, there being no. letch of any kind. Oamaru South parents are once again indebted to Mr Reniiie and Albany Street parents and friends for kindnesses extended to the members of the Band. Some 15 boys, including a tug-of-war team, are taking part- in tie' schools sports to be held in Dunedin on next- Saturday. A commjttee has been appointed by the Association to arrange for the billeting of those boys who are not staying with friends." It was decided, on the motion of Mr Lawrence, to make' application for a teachers' room, which the- convenience of the large staff necessitated. Mi- Cafder moved that, the Committee express its appreciation of the painstaking efforts of Mr Fox in trailing the band for the competitions, and that the boys be congratulated on their victory, which was seconded by Mr Lawrence and carried unanimously.
The reading of the Inspectors' reports elicited appreciation of the school work. it was reported that the rec-ent concert had resulted in the nett return of £75. Vote of thanks were accorded Mrs .J. S. Bee. Miss Shaw, Mr D. E. Booth. Mr Deal, the caretaker of the Opera House, and the Oamaru Orchestral Society for assistance given in connection with the concert.
Mr Lawrence's report that the school war memorial sub-committee 1 recommended a memorial gate with suitable front fence resulted in the decision to call a meeting of householders and friends of the school to discuss the matter. Accounts amounting "to £1 los 6d wc-iv passed for payment.
