In the presence of 50.000 spec tutors, tlu> English team opened the Australian tour. The visitors won the toss, and frdin the kick-off forced the game, rushing the ball to the home twenty-five, where, after much close work. Johnson secured from the pack and. crossing the line, made the first score. Grodnow converting. Sydney then tried to force the game, but the combination .of the visitors was too good, and the local players were beaten back. Rodgers next scored for the visitors, which was not converted, and a few minutes later the same played again scored. -Grodnow converting. The home team here forced the game, and after much close work Horder scored. Fraser converting. Grodnow then kicked a penalty goal. The first score livened up the home team, who forced the game for the remainder of the first half. Horder scoring a try which was not converted. These were the half-time scores. Svdncy opened the second half with dash, and after a rush to the English twenty-five M'Gowan scored, but the try was not- converted. In the play, that followed the local forwards showed superiority in the scrums, and then Horder kicked a penalty goal, and a few minutes later kicked another, thus equalising ihe scores. The Englishmen again picked up and forced the game, Stockwell scoring twice and Grodnow [converting both tries. Sydney rallied ! and tried hard to equalise., the effort ! bringing the score up to 20 by Horder I scoring and converting. But a, few ' minutes before time Grodnow kicked a ! penalty goal, thus removing all Tiope of j victory- for Sydney.
