FAREWELL AT PUKEURI.
(From our" own Correspondent.) On 'Wednesday evening last there was a large attendance in Pukeuri Hall of residents and friends who had gathered to do honor to and bid farewell to Miss Begg and Mr J. McKay. The first part of the evening was devoted to euchre, thirteen tables being occupied. There was very keen conir petition, two ladies and four men tieing for the first places. Mrs T. Liken < proved to be the winner of the ladies' section and Mr C. Hedges of the men's, , while Miss P. Thomson and Mr Warren ' carried off the consolation prizes. Mr H. McKenzie proved a most cap- , able chairman and made the presenta- - tion to the guests of a handsome divan chair and a wallet to Mr McKay ana a gold wristlet watch to Miss Begg . He ; referred to the well-known good quali- ' ties of both recipients. Mr McKay has < been a resident of the district for close - on fifty years, and has remained in pos- j session of the farm he is about to vacate for twenty-seven years. He was for many years a member of the school j committee and throughout his residence , took an active part in all social gatherings. He was also a member of the . Patriotic, Farewell and Welcome Home - Committees during the war, and took ' a keen interest in all matters pertaining to the welfare of the district- and ot the soldiers. He has proved himself right through a good farmer and an out-and-out sport. Miss Begg was always a willing worker, taking her full , share of all work allotted to the ladies J of the. district, and .was a very active worker and member of the Pukeuri - lied Cross. 1 Mr McKay, on behalf of Miss Begg - and himself,; thanked the residents tor turning out in'such large numbers, and ( for their very handsome gifts. , A bounteous supper' was then dispensed by the ladies, after which a merry dance was held, old and young tho- . roughly enjoying themselves. : Mr (jr. Hunter controlled the dance ; in his capable manner, and splen- 1 did music was supplied by Mr and Mrs < J: McKenzie, to whom a very hearty i .vote of thanks was passed before coneluding the gathering with "Auld Lang Syne/' < On Thursday afternoon the members ' of the Pukeuri Red Cross entertained Miss Begg at afternoon tea. On behalf ■ of the ladies, Mrs L. Forrester presented to Miss Begg a circular gold brooch set with pearls, and*a solid leather hand bag. Miss Begg suitably replied.
