RACING NOTES. (By Skirmisher.) The Ashhurst annual race meotjng takes place next Wednesday. Racing at Washdyke next Thursday and Friday. The Takapuua Jockey Club's Spring .fixture begins next Saturday, and will be continued the following Wednesda}'. Owners and trainers should bear in mind that acceptances, for tin: South Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring meeting close on Monday, at 8 p.m. I Acceptances for the Winton Club's fixture close next Thursday. Rose Wreath just"- beat Bonnie Heather on the post in the Spring Plate on the opening day at Ricearton over eight furlongs, and on this runnings it does not look like good business to support the Kilbroney Hlly for the Oaks, which is run over a mjle and a half. Mr McDonald's favorite may however stay with age. Rose' Wreath, Some Kid, and Royal Star received support on Saturday last at Riecarton, as did Weary Willie in the Welcome Stakes at Ellerslie. When the money came from the right quarter for Vagabond, the Martian gelding was soon second choice for the New Zealand Cup. Arthur Oliver has quickly disposed of some of his avoirdupois, as at the recent Trentham meeting Arthur went to scale at 8.9, and this after having only been about six weeks in the saddle riding work. By his '"bad and injudicious riding" on Gay Lad in the New Zealand Cup, Harold Young did the wool kinas a good turn. , Ben Deeley, who steered Vagabond to victory in the Cup. was also on Viee-Admiral when he- won the same race for Messrs AY. G. and G. L. Stead, undG. D. Greenwood in 1911. Braekenfiold, who cost his present connections 65gns., when he was sold by Mr Gerald Stead, could not be bought under four figures, and this on the eve of the recent carnival meeting. Moorfowl was smartly out in the AVelcomc Stakes, and the others did not trouble the Autumnus-Kirrie-muir tilly. Humbug, on the other hand. did. not begin well, but was putting in good work at the finish. Bon Spec, who is usually first out in his races, did not begin well, although he drew No. 2 marble in the Stewards', and as the course proper 'was reached, Bush's mount was on the outside with no chance of getting up. Battle Song stripped a much better ' horse than he did in Sastinoff's cup, and it was very bad luck for his owner to ibuinp up against Yagai bond, who improved with racing. | Martian .has played an important part, in siring winners of the New Zealand Cup. .as Ardenvhor, Menelaus, Sasanoff, and Vagabond are all by Martian, while AYarstep, who head-heated with Indigo in 1911, is also by the same sire. Hector Gray rode Alteration (first favorite) in the Mitchelson Cup at Ellerslie on Saturday last, but his mount was amongst the also started brigade. Mr AA 7 . A.-Saunders has again been appointed handicapper to the Southland Racing Club, while Mr AA r . Norman will control the starting barrier. Roy Berry 'has been granted a trainer's license by the Dunedin District Committee, and intends settling in Southland. Nobleman, when running well up with the leading division in the New Zealand Cup, burst a blood-vessel and was not persevered with. Mantua, who won the Trial Plate at the recent Kurow meeting, was recently purchased bv Mr AV. Stone of Jnvercargill from F. D. Jones. McDuff was badly interfered will! during the running of the Epsom /High Weight on Mondav. At the four furlong post Sir Geo. Clifford's ■colt got sent right back, and then he finished up a good third. Given a clear run it is safe to sav that he would have been the winner. . After his good showing in the Cup Battle Song received solid support in [ the Metropolitan on Derby day. Sasanoff, who won the' Melbourne ! Cup in 1916, and last rear's New j Zealand Cup. is to be retired from the racing tracks and will be used as a hack by Mr Stead. - The Coronet mare Inah did the'wool kings" a nice turn when she won the Stewards' Handicap on Saturday, as the Cup winner had been coupled with several likelv ones for the second leg, but Inah was ! not included in the number. Grand Opera, the dam'of Rossini, has given the New Zealand turf some very useful performers, for Cherubim', Tannhauser, and Soldiers' Chorus were all bred from this matron of the stud by Mr J. F. Buchanan at Kinloch, Little River. Rossini, by winning the Derbv on Monday, makes the fourth time that the "blue ribbon" has been won bv horses won by Mr G. D. Greenwood. The time this year-, however, was shockingly slow. i
