The Miners' Federation has written to tho mineowners offering to abandon the "go-slow" policy conditional on the owners granting a conference on wages within a fortnignt. The Canterbury Education Board, at its meeting to-day. endorsed the Wanganui Borough Council's protest against the reinstatement- of Professor von Zcdlitz at Victoria College. Hope Whitfield Home, a military tle fault er who achieved a good deal of prominence about, twelve months ago, recently lodged an appeal against the inclusion of his name in the military defaulters list, but when his name was called in the Chnstchnvch Magistrate's Court this afternoon it was stated that Home had left for America about three -weeks ago. Horne achieved notoriety in the first place owing to the insistence with which he claimed to be an American citizen. He gave the military authorities a great deal of trouble before he was finally sentenced by a district court martial at Christchurch on November 29 last year .to twelve months' imprisonment with hard labor, on a''charge of failing to obey the lawful commands of his superior officer. Mr Raymond, K.C., who appeared for the Defence Department, stated that he had been advised that tlie appellant could not be present, as he had left the country. The Magistrate (Mr MeCarthy) said that Horne had left with a passport- issued by the American Government. The magistrate dismissed the appeal with costs against the appellant.
