AMUSEMENTS.

SYDNEY STATE ORCHESTRA.

It is now definitely decided that the Sydney State Orchestra will visit Oaiuaru —if the guarantee of £3OO ! possibly less") is arranged. * aud if certain other conditions can be- complied with—for both afternoon and evening performances on Thursday. February f>th. It should be explained that, even though the local performances pay to more than the extent of I.b« guarantee, the guarantors will still be' liable for their proportion of the loss of the Dominion tour, if any. Alreadv .iMOOO in guarantees has been secured for the Soutli Island, and £SOOO is in sight. In view of thi.s fact it may be possible to reduce the local .guarantee to £'2so. Tf ihe orchestra visits Oaiuaru as. above stated, il will be necessary for it to be accommodated in Oaiuaru for the nighr. and as the performers number 80. if the accommodation is to be paid for. it will seriously reduce the proiiU. It is hoped that the musical people of Oaiuaru will billet the members free, as was done in the case of the Sheffield Choir, and offers of such accommodation will be gratefully received at the meeting*!)! the Council Chambers to-raorrow night elsewhere advertised. The afternoon and evening performances are contingent, in fact, upon support of this nature. The tour is not a moneymaking one. but an educational one, but. though it must pay its way, there is every possibility of a substantial prolif. Fifty per cent, of tho profits goes to a fund for tlie encouragement of music in New Zealand, the exact nature of which rests with the trustees, but which will verv likely go to the foundation of a cotiservatorium of music, ft is definitelv stattd that 50 per cent, of tho profits will be spent in the promotion of music in the Dominion. With these facts to ponder over, there should lie an enthusiastic meeting to-morrow nlght.
