CHIEF INSPECTOR'S RECOMMEN- | DATIONS. By Telegraph. (Special to tile Oamaru Mail.) WELLINGTON, November 2. The. Chief Inspector of Fisheries, in the year's report, again emphasises the necessity of the Government- givijig every possible towards increasing and cheapening the people's fc?od supplies. He points out the economic importance of fish in this respect, and l expresses his conviction that - a certain amount of money must- be provided; by tilie Government and ©very encouragement given to fishermen and others already employed in this. industry. Another point which lie stresses' is Government-encouragement to Municipal Councils of the principal cities in the erection of suitable fish markets and in the adoption of* a sysiStem. of distribution of fish from these markets, and the supplying of inland towns and country districts with a regular provision of fresh andi cured fish. Among other suggestions for assisting and. encouraging fishermen Mr Ayson -recommends advances to fishermen to_ purchase boats and outfit, the erection of j fish-chilling and l ice-making plants in I .outlying parts of she coast, the encouragement of purse-seining by practical demonstration of the use of this net, by which method, he says,. fish can be taken in very .large quantities and at small cost compared with .trawling, the giving of a bonus on fish canned and cured for export and: also on the' production of fertilisers manufactured from fislh. offal, kelp, and seaweed, andi. insurance of fishermen's boats by the ■State Fire Office.
