inquiry Into claims for GRANTS.
(Special to the Oaniaru Mail.) Wellington, February 11. The Minister of Mines (Hon. W. D. < Mac Donald) has instructed several officer oF his department ..to inquire into .ill claims made by prospectors and otheix for assistance in gold mining. The result will be a comprehensive report for the consideration of Cabinet, which -w-ill authorise grants to-the tnllo,t extent of the financial resources available. " ■ ... -Mining," stated the Minister to voiir correspondent, "is maintaining its activitv fairly, well. Gold returns are fa ill v well up/and one good feature is that' three fields in the South Island which were supposed to be worked out, continue to vield gold. A mild_Tush to the Howard -River,- in the - Waimea Countv. took place early ; last year, some "ood returns of coarse gold, being obtained. This field;.is.. maintaining its output, and some .big sluicing proposition- are being developed on -it.
