HOW TO ACQUIRE A FULL CHEST.
.The best time lor enlarging the capacity of the chest is, of couise, early youth. At that period of life the ribs are cartilaginous and elastic, and therefore the growth of the chest can be more easily promoted by exercising his muscles. However, even at" a late age we need not despair, as much improvement can be i made by judicious treatment. ' Breathing exercises are of great value for expanding the chest. They straighten the back, put the shoulder blades in place, and make the neck as Nature intended it —a round, linn column to support the head.
Wc may not bo overburdened with time,. but we tau go through the simplest exercises, because they require no extra time. It is not necessary to have an elaborate system. The nostrils are the proper organs of • breathing. Every time we step into the outer air wc can fill our lungs with pure, fresh air bv inhaling through the no.se a deep breath, retaining it for a few seconds, and then expelling it slowly through the lips. 'Another tiling is to remember to walkupright. 'l'o allow the upper part of the body to stoop is very injurious to health. Other modes of developing the chest consist of the use of dumbbells, rowing, etc.
Round shoulders are caused in must eases by sedentary occupations, but occasionally they arise from a weak condition of health. There are shoulder biaces sold for the object of rectifying this little physical deformity, which answer the purpose admirably. To effect .a complete cure, however, a strict regimen must be followed. Care should be taken to always/sit in au upright position, walk as erect as possible, and sleep on a hard mattress with only one, pillow. To bold the hands behind the back when taking a walk is also helpful in effecting a cure. The use of dumbbells is an excellent exercise ■for persons who-are'inclined to stoop.
