A POPULAR POSITION.
RUSH FOE. THE BOARD OF TRADE. NEARLY 200 APPLICANTS. By Telegraph. (Special to OamaniiUail.) Wellington', November 24. Though the tasks ahead of the new Board: of Trade are extremely difficult, there is no lack of talent" at the Government's disposal in appointing the three members, one of whom will receive £IOOO per annum, and preside over the Board, the other two receiving £6OO each. It is hoped that the Board will manage to control exorbitant profits on the necessaries of life, a task which the Government, failed to accomplish during the first fifteen months of the war, as it is evident from unsuccessful attempts the world over that the fixing of maximum prices does not secure the desired end. The applications for the Board of Trade amount to nearly two hundred. Politicians and ex-politicians arc said to be in strong force. No fewer than 32 applications came in on the date of closing, and a dozen more were in the post at the time, and will be considered. Tho classification process will take several days, and Cabinet is r.ot likely to make an appointment for a fortnight.
