DUNTROON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) | Red Cross Work. —The Duntroon i Lh dies' lied Cross and Belgian Relief Committee held a general meeting on Friday afternoon, •when there was a j good representative meeting. The sec- i retary reported that since last meeting j £2O in cash and a case of goods valued j at about £2O had been sent forward to the Oamaru Red Cross Committee, and material for making up has been bought to the value of about. £24. The report was adopted. After a little discussion, re future work it was resolved that a jumble sale be held on Decern- ! ber 11th. It was resolved that in in- > ture the Committee be called the Red Cross, Belgian and General Patriotic Committee. The nest meeting is to be held on Friday, 26th, and a sub-com-mittee will attend the_ men's committee- on Saturday( 20th inst., to ask toi assistance with the jumble sale. Weather—Last Monday a. very erratic thunderstorm, with heavy hailstones, visited Duntroon and it ishard to say where it fell heaviest. Everyone in the immediate locality has a. different opinion. However, it was patchy and did not cover u very laige area/ I have the official rain guage

here, which registered 146 points, and just after the storm it was full to the brim, so that some must have overflowed. Three houses close together had water running down the inside walls from the overflowing gutters, and other people report that the same thing happened at their places. Others would gladly have put up with the discomfort for the sake of getting the moisture, for the land is badly in want of rain, and to-day (Friday) we have had a very drying nor'-wester, but farmers have to live on hopes.
