A private cablegram received in Christchureh to-day' states that Anthony Wilding, vl) e well-known tennis champion, has. been killed in the -north of-iFrance. ' ' r -\ ■ .' New Zealand championship meeting when 16, the Scottish championship .in i 1-904, ail three Covered Court championships at Queen's, 1907; the Doubles 'championship with Brookes at Wimbledon, 1907, and with Ritchie in 1908, tho championship of Europe in 1908. AVitli Brookes won the Davis Cup m •1908 and 191-1. Won championship ol Now Zealand 1906. 100 S. 1909, Victoria 1909, South Africa- 1910. Undefeated in England 1910, retained Wimbledon, championship 1911. 1.912, and 1913 beaten by Brookes in challenge round 1914. He was for »oven years the mostsuccessful tennis player of his time, though beaten in isolated instances by Brcokes (Australia) and M'Loughlm, ol America, At the outbreak of the war AVikling immediately volunteered lor service, -and early won distinction, being mentioned in despatches and granted a commission. Wilding is tho third of the Davis Cui> representatives to lose i life in this war, the other two behvj; Count Salm <i'i Austria and K. Powell j of Canada.]
