OTEPOPO NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) Tlie long winter evenings have again brought their rounds of amusements in their train. Some short time ago we had the annual bachelors' ball, with about 70 couples in attendance. The affair was ably carried out by a committee of young men tinder the secretaryship of Mr G. Anderson. The music was supplied by Mr H. Brown (piano) and Mr Sherwin (cornet), and the M.C.'s for the evening were • Messrs Aitchison and O. -Daly. The Quadrille Assembly conducted by. the Hall Committee is Wing well patronised, while the series of ' socials under the auspices of the School Committee and Lawn Tennis Club are fairly well attended. " The- Card Club have had some enjoyable- inter-club matches with Hampden and Waianakarua, and in most cases have proved their superiority. The intellectual side of the" community is being catered for by the Debating Society, who have weekly meetings, at which important social, political, and other questions receive careful and well-reasoned discussion by the members. Last Friday the Society debated the- Bible-in-schools question, and both i sides had marshalled their facts so logi- j cally and carefully that the chairman i (Mr J. Beckingsale) reserved his judg- J ment. , In connection with Rev. Reunie's Bible Class there is a. chip-carving class, and once a week a dozen or more young people meet at the Hall and show their industry, perseverance, and skill in carving patterns on their smoothly planed kauri boards. MiRennie, who is no mean amateur with . the chip knife, is taking much trouble with and interest in this class.
