The tone of the journal is optimistic; and we add our wishes to those already expressed at the opening ceremony, that all the hopes of the. promoters will be duly realised. ' Regarding the retiring editor and staff, we fully appreciate their recent public recognition of our services in supply■ing them with set-up type-metal during the period when their machinery was disorganised. Our relations with them have always been of the friendliest nature, and they have our best wishes for their future welfare. In connection with the suggestion brought forward at the meeting of the Borough Council last night, by Councillor Mitchell, it is interesting to note that at South Melbourne recently a trial was made with a tar-spraver purchased by the South Melbourne City Council. The Argus reports that an area, of 1100 'square yards of road surface was sprayed with distilled tar in ]1 minutes, and that at a. previous trial and with, tlie same machine 1-100 yards were sprayed in 12- minutes. These times included turning the machine and other incidental stoppages. The machine is drawn by a. single jiorse, and holds 2">o gallons of tar, which is heated by an internal lire. The fir-Men ess of human nature generally has hwn exemplified by an incident somewhat unique for Oamaru' where nothing is .supposed, to happen to gloss the monotony of life.
