Per Press Association. Dunedin, June 5. - -.At a meeting of the Otago Education Institute to-day a. motion was carried: "That in view of the importance to teachers of the study of science. iii education, the University Senate ,he asked to make the following alterations to the Arts course: : —(a) That education be included' in the list, of honors subjects l ; (b) that the conditions for the Doctorate of Literature be altered to permit of the presentation, of the 5.1.5., embodying the results of original research in educational practice or literature." The following motions were carried. —"That the Department of Education be asked to consider the following:— A teacher who is unable for various 'reasons to attend the University classes, and who must therefore sit for terms as an exempted student, should be allowed to take Advantage of a- bursary in so far as college registration fees for term and degree examination are concerned." "That the meeting reaffirm the' belief that any scheme of salaries basedi on either average attendance or average roll number cannot be satisfactory, and instruct delegates to the forthcoming meeting in- Wellington to oppose any scheme based on these principles." A motion approving of a referen(hmi on the question of the introduction of religious instruction in primary schools was defeated bv 32 votes to 12.
