STEAMER'S ROUGH TRIP.

After a somewhat tempestuous voyage of sewn days the Melbourne Steamship Company's Melbourne arrived at Lyttelton this morning with over 2000 tons of Newcastle coal. The vessel left a New South Wales port on Saturday morning last, and ouee into the Tasman Sea eneounteiT-d a strong southerly gale, with high seas, which ;'oi' four days rased with the force of a cyclone. On Tuesday last r the decks were awash lore and aft and in the fury of the ' gale the ladders, steam pipe casings and I other deck fittings were bent and. 'broken, whilst the sails and tarpaulin ! hatch covers were also ripped io pieces. The starboard working boat was also .stove in. For several hours the Melbourne was hove to. and Captain Heddle found it necessary to use oil bags over the bow. this being done with marked success. Subsequently the weather moderated a little, and clear headway was made. Farewell Spit was pas-ed at 1 a.m. yesterday. Owing to the constant tossing of the vessel the cargo shifted, and the Melbourne arrived in port with a decided list.
