THE LOCAL MARKETS

Oarnaru Mail Office, . Monday afternoon, The past week was not characterised by a hustling market in either grain" or produce. Millers are acting cautiously and purchases, are restricted. Oa the other hand, South Canterbury farmers are ottering less sparingly than are those of North Otago, and the amount of grain changing hands isjar greater on the north side of the Waitaki than on the south. Velvet still arrests the attention of millers, and lines of first-class quality are readily placed at late quotations to farmers, via., os 11-Vd to 4s nett. on trucks. There is an "improved inquiry for red chaff from the south, and as this variety does not appear to be too plentiful, the market shows a slight improvement. Value: 3s lOd nett on trucks. Red Tuscan is inquired for ?t 3s CHd to 3s 10d: solid straw tuscan is onoted at 3s SJd to 3s 9dj Marshall's white (in over supply, and with millers not keen to purchase) 3s 8d to 3s Sid, all nett at sidings. There exists a good demand for fowl wheat in the north, and good while is easily enough placed at Ss 6d to 3s 7d on trucks, nett. Only moderate business is passing on the oats market, North Island merchants not being inclined to purchase for immediate delivery. On the other hand, farmers show no anxiety to force sales. Quotations: A grade Gartons Is 8d to Is 3|d; B grade, Is 7d to Is 77 ] ,d; good heavy Duns, Is &d; Algerians. .Is 8d (if quality good);. all nett at sidings. A few lines of potatoes have been on tho market, but merchants are not keen to operate owing to the difficulty experienced in securing orders from the the north. The quantity available in North Otago fortunately does not appear excessive, and as holders are uot tempted by current values, they prefer to pit in the meantime. Quotations, £3 t-o £8 os on trucks.
