TERRIBLE GALE IN THE CHANNEL.
SEVERAL WRECKS REPORTED. MANY LIVES LOST. [By Electric Telegrat-11—Copyright.1 (Feu Press Association.) London, February 13. There lias been a terrific gale in the Channel. The Land's End eoasguards spied a ship's num. in which were three men, a mile'orf, being rapidly driven shorewards before the heavy seas. They summoned the rocket brigade, four miles away, and a- tragic race ensued. Jint as the crew reached the top of- the. cliff the boat was caught by a- huge waves. dashed on the rocks, and smashed to pieces. The crew disappeared in the mountainous seas. The three-masted schooner My Own, laden with cement, was struck by the heavy sras and the hatches were smashed. This admitted water to the hold, -and the vessel sank off Shoreham. The crew of eight were drowned. The captain clung to the rigging, and was seen in the morning and ;e<cue-.l by a lifeboat. The bodies of three men were found in a ship's punt at Land's End. They are believed to be part of the crew of. the steamer Arnside, of Sunderland, which was supposed to have l'uuaddered with all hands. London. February 11. The. steamer Arnside, which foundered, carried twelve hands.
