•Since his marriage with tlie famous American millionaire's daughter, the Duke of Talleyrand lias liquidated £BO,OOO worth of debts contracted with moneylenders.
The' matrimonial history of the Duchess of Talleyrand has been a very wmarliable-'oiiiie. She was Miss Anna Gou'lcli whcd , in 1895, she met Count Boni- da Castellane, and gave her hand, her hearty and a large portion of her .-father's fortune-.to that estimable young duellist. In 1906_ slie obtained a. divorce from the Count, and for two years she lived in Paris. * Then she married'the Prince do Sagan, sou of- the late Duke of Talleyrand, and a cousin to Count Boni. Early in 1908, when the Prince de Sagan was paying Attentions to, his cousin's former wife, the relations between him and the Count became very much strained, until they culminated in a highly discreditable scene outside a fashionable Paris church. They had been attending a, requi.eum mass, and at the close the Count followed the Prince outside, spat in his face, and wound up by knocking h.im down in -the gutter-. The young nobleman continued to give his cousin a bad time, kicking him and
trampling upon him until the bystanders interfered. In April, 1903, the announcement was made that Mme. Anna Gould had determined tor marry the Prince die Sagan in spit© of her family's objections and of the fact that under her father's will she would lose £1,500,000 by the marriage. Three months later, however, the Goulds withdrew their objections to , the union, and the marriage accordingly took place. lii 1910 the New York courts .appointed a/ receiver to make an examination of the estates of the Princess de Sagan. This official subsequently reported that: the estate left by the Princess' father amounted to £5,000,000. The income in 1903 was £939,505, but- it fell during the financial panic of 1907-8 to £570,395. It was further shown by tile receiver's that the Princess, in the first four years of her married life to Count dp Castellan©, became responsible, for debts-to the amount of { £l, 5200,000. . I
