Dunedin, December 16. .The first of the local wool sales was held to-day, when there was the largest) gathering of buyers ever seen here, tc-; 'presenting British, Continental, andl! American purchasers, in addition to the < New Zealand buyers. The total offering; comprised;'B72l bales. The; condition of the wool wa~s : Superior to.that of last season, but "a riumber of good claps; were spoiled by old.seed, which cut off American competition and reduced prices by fully 2d per pound. The following is the range of prices: "Merino, super 12d to 13d, medium;to.^good•; : tolled; inferior to heavy-conditioned: Bid to 9Jd; halfbred super 13d t0.14d, medium to good 10£ d to inferior 9d.to IQdT, crossbred super 12d to.lSJd," medium to good 9id to llld, iflferi&rf Sid;to 9d; pieces—super" 10jd to 12|dy medium to good BJd. to lOd, inferior; 6}d to Bd, locks. 4d to 7d.
