OAMARU TROTTING CLUB'S MEETING. President: Mr J. R. Mitchell. Vicepresident: Mr Tho». Meek. * te ~ wards: Messr.s Geo. Brute, E. Conlan, R. M. French. P. C. Hjornng, D. Kennedv. T. A. Munro, R. The Oamaru Trotting dub was lavored with fine weather tor its meeting todav, the change from tin- climatic conditions of the past week b.'ing much appreciated. Trolling ha>. its devotees just as have tho gallop-, and being a holiday there was a very large attendance: "indeed, judging by the patronage afforded by the ladies there was an inclination to make attendance at the courso the occasion of a pleasurable outing. Since the inauguration of the Club a few years ago the sport has been placed on a firm footing locally, while the patronage accorded by horse-owners has been gratityiug and a compliment to good management. On the present occasion it is especially so. with all the. events well filled and the finishes fougiit out between horses that Lave previously distinguished themselves. At, the close of last week the stewards of the Club must have felt despondent at seeing their well-laid plans threatened with almost certain wreckage by a crossgrained cWk of the weather, for -t. looked as though the ground could not possibly recover in time to make the outing anything more than merely possible. The drying wind of yesterday and this morning, however, knew its business so well as to make .the meeting, not onlv possible, but thoroughly enjoyable." Certainly there was a good, deal of water lying abort the ground, but that had to'be ovadefl. As for the course it was in wonderfully good order, considering. Tile officials, with the in-, terest of the sport at heart, entered .upon'their several duties enthusiastically, and everything moved smoothly.. The trains from north and south'this morning were well laden ; the special to the course exuded holiday-makers, ;and cars" and drags conveyed- many others by road, so that the course presented ;a. btisv sight when racing ,hegan._ Manyimprovements are to be : noticed -abotit the grounds. Tile stand lias been greatlv enlarged, and w'ill now accommodate double its previous capacity; tho course, with, time, lias been much improved bv "working, «nd the 'Club;-, though but-a few years old, is in position now of assured success so long a3 its officials maintain-their present enthusiasm, and at -present it certainly shows, no sign of flagging.
