DEATH OF MR HUGH PATERSON.
The death is Announced! of Mr Hugh Paterson, at the residence of his son., Mr TV. H. PateTson, at Awamon.. Mr Paterson was one of the earliest ofSouthland's pioneers. He was horn in Douglas (Lanarkshire) in 1829,. and as a boy studied gardening as an occupation. He left Glasgow with Mrs Paterson and one son in the ship Sir "William Eyre in November, 1862, and arrived at BLufF in May, 1868, having during the voyage lost one son and g«aincd' another. Among the passengers on the same ship Was the late Mr James Craig. Mr Paterson tramped! from Bluff to Invercargill, and then accepted employment for o, month or two on the formation of the railway line between those two places. Then lis engaged) for a short period in market gardening in Invercargill, but this did not provide a sufficient outlet for his energies, audi he moved further afield, taking a- farm at Makarewa. In 1875 when the Knapdiale estate was cut up lie moved with his then growing family to Waikaka. There he farmed with success until about 1896. Since retiring he- has lived with his son, Mr "VV. H. Paterson, first at Gore and latterly at Oamaru. For 35 years after they landed' at Bluff neither Mr nor Mrs Paterson was out of Southland. The family consisted of six sons: James (Mains, Waikaka), S. B. " (Oamaru), J. B. G. B. (Gore), Robert (Dunedin), W. H. (Oamaru), arid' onie sister, Mrs Mitchell, of Gis borne. Besides thess one son and one daughter died. Mrs Paterson is still alive to mourn- the departure of r life-long mate, and the friends of the family will sympathise with thsin in their loss.
