AIDING AND ABETTING A STRIKE.
(Per Press Association.)- :■'' Auckland, June 11. .James- Collett, secretary ;to the Waterside Workers' Union, was fined £2O for .aiding and. abetting a strike in ■ connection with the discharge of the steamer Papnroa-on November 22nd'. In giving his decision against Collett, Mr Kettle, S.M., said he held that there had been a strike owing to a combined abstention of unionists from work to influence the conditions of their employment. The. ease, which was brought under section six of the Arbitration Act, which provided a penalty up to £2OO, overwhelmingly established that Collett did aid and abet the men in the strike. He had abetted without instructions or authority from the officers o'f the union-,, and had taken a wrong view of his powers as secretary. Fortunately for Collett the strike was of short duration. Collett gave formal notice of appeal, and Mr Kettle expressed the hope that the case would be taken to the Arbitration Court, which he would be pleased to afford every facility.
