' The match Australians v., Northamptonshire commenced in ho': weather. The attendance is moderate and the wicket good. Smith, Whittv, Vi ebster, and Hazlitt are not included in the Australian team. Australia batted first, Gregory and Bardslev lacing East and Thompson. When tiie total had reached 06 Bardslev plaved on to Smith, to whom he had never been comfortable. Gregory had scored 32 in 45 minutes. Macartney partnered Gregory and a line stand ensued. Gregory reached oO in ,J) minutes, the total reaching 100 in to minutes. When Gregory was u3 he was missed from consecutive balls oft bTnith, .i-iviii"- chances to Vials in the slips and Thompson a<: short-leg. He was also beaten twice in the same over, and at oi <>ave a difficult chance to Buswell, who was standing back to Wells. Kellewav stayed with Mayne till the score was 357, when the newcomer, plaving back, was bowled by Thompson. Matthews did not last long, and at 368 was bowled in hitting oul: at Smith. Received Mav 10, at noon. London, May 9. Carkeek was bowled first ball by Thompson, .and without addition to the score M'Laren was run out. The in-nino-s lasted 290 minutes, the last seven wickets falling for 75 runs. Thompson had 99 runs hit off him before capturing a wicket. .Vials and Seymour opened tor_ tiie coimtv, and the former was quickly bowled off his pads.
