WAITAKI COLLIE DOG CLUB.

Tlie second and concluding day's trials wort- got through yesterday, in striking contrast to the opening day, the weather bore a wintry feeling and' a few diops of lain fell. The attendance, in view of the better turnout on the first dav would have been larger had the dav been more propitious. In regard to the work performed, like that, of the fust day, it was not tip to standard, and certainly much below what ;s usuailv displayed at the Waitaki meeting. Certainly towards the end the li-dit became defective, but there must have been other contributing causes. Id the head, bring hack, and yard class tii.-'i-c was a perceptible lack of that close and earnest work at the yard, the Luntawav and slew event lost a good ileal of its interest through the inability ..f the bulk of the competitors to quaht>. Out of tweuiv-une contestants only n\ c were able to get to the qualilying stage, and. a solitaiv competitor completed the course. The' trouble seemed to be at rh<> foot of the hill. The annual smoke .concert may be fairly considered as part and parcel of the whole trials. To many it is of more importance. Not everyone comprehends the meaning of "Whirr-ee-go" and other quaint' commands, and they must necessarily therefore evince an enthusiasm in other directions. 'And the smoke concert thus affords an opportunity.' One thing is certain, anyway, that that spirit of friendship between master and man, victor and vanquished, pervades the smoke concert function, and behind this there was a cordiality which meant much to all present. Close on eighty attended, and Mr N. Hayes presided. A long list of toasts were honored, amongst which were "The King," "The Army, Navy, and Territorials" (proposed bv Mr' S. J. Davys and responded to by Messrs Stewart and Trotter), '/Agricultural, Pastoral •and Commercial Interests" (Mr 'FT. Barclay: responded to by Messrs Kelo'licr. Stewart, and Adanison), "The Visitors." "Absent Members (proposed bv Mr J. Menzies), "The Waitaki Collie Dog Club" (proposed by Mr Heckler and responded to bv Messrs Menzies and Haves). "The N.Z. and A. Land' C 0.," "The Judges." "The Competitors-." "The Workers." "The Ladies."

"The Performei-s," etc. Interspersed \\wc songs and recitations. which, eounled with story and reminiscence made a hnopv gathering. Mr F. C. I'llvry presided at the piano.
