" The entire Filipovici family, numbering ten, committed suicide on learning that the eldest son. by whom they were supported, had failed; in business. A family council decided to die rather than beg. The father, mother, grandmother, two growing daughters, and five sons stupefied themselves with beer, and went to sleep in a garret with two pans of charcoal. The youngest, aged twelve, left a letter explaining the reason.
