IMPROVING KING GEORGE'S PARK.

Before long the work of beautifying King George's Park should be well in hand. Yesterday the: Entertainment Committee met arid decided to give the first entertainment on -Tune 3rd (the King's Birthday). Mr;-Edgar Randall was given charge of the programme, and will endeavor to obtain some talent from other towns for the concert. The Finance Committee too met yesterday and appointed a deputation to wait'up-" on the Council to try and get that body to go on with the work, as they couid provide guarantors for the part of the funds promised so that the work could be started immediately. Dr Whitton and Mr Wm. Waddell waited upon the Council as a deputation from King George's Park Committee.

Mr Waddell said that they represented the finance section of the commitie, and were waiting on the Council with the object of;, hastening the work of improving the park. In view they had already a total of £724 in subsidies, and in addition to this they had £l5O promised by business men on condition that they raised another £l5O. This brought up_ the total amount of money" anSL promises up..to £IOB4. At a meeting of the Finance Committee £6O had been subscribed, which left onlv £9O to he collected to bring in the £3OO that they required., and which they would provide the Council with guarantees that it would be collected. He said the promises -included £224 from the Gymnasium Trustees, £250 Government subsidy, £250 that they got by a grant from the: Council, and £24 cash in hand. He impressed upon the Council the f actHhat the people expected the park to _be ready for next season, and; to do this they" must commence at-once. It_ was quite reasonable to ask the Council to hasten on the work. ? They did not want to wait for the formality or getting the transfers from the Harbor, Board and Government. - Dr Whitton said that the. Council would not be taking any risk in acceding to their request, -and he emphasised the necessity of haste in the matter and not to leave the work for.late in the winter. ■'■■ '-.'■-- ■ -.-'.'; ;' ..-.
