The Ashburton Trotting Club's Boxing Day meeting proved most successful in every respect. The weather, which was uncertain in the morning, became almost ideal later, and the attendance constituted a record. The going, too, was considerably better than might have been expected in view of the previous day's rain. The stakes offered for the day's sport exceeded £6OO in the aggregate, and the entries and racing were consequently very good. The meeting was the first held by the Club since the abolition of the bookmakers, and the totalisator receipts, which in the two days' meeting of last year totalled 4393, were mXich exceeded to-day, when £6562 10s was invested through the machine. Results: — Trial Handicap.—The Lark 1, Agile 2, Lady Rattoo 3. Scratched : Gladiator, Royal Belle. After the first half mile The Lark led and won easily by two lengths, third horse 50 yards away. U'iine, 3min 48sec. Micham Handicap.—March Hare 1, Clivc 2, Alita 3. Scratched: Bravo. March Hare came up at the mile, and, holding his own, won with ease by ten lengths, Alita a length behind Clive. The second and third horses were in the lead till the straight was reached, when the scratch horse, who had been going strong, passed rapidly through the field, and won a splendid race by four lengths, Marie ; Narelle being two lengths ahead of Hue Elect.
