WELLINGTON v. HAWKE'S BAY,

(Pee Phess Association.) Wellington, December 25. The representative cricket match Wellington v. Hawke's Bay commenced on Saturday in good weather and the wicket was in good condition, but the attendance of the public was not large. The Wellington team was the same'as previously announced with the exception that Phillips and Grace replaced Finlon and Brice. Hawke's Bay won the toss and sent Wellington to the field, Saunders and Findlay bowling to Board and Creed. Board, the Gloucestershire professional, did not waste much time in getting on to the bowling and played Saunders and Findlay as he liked, placing the ball with admirable judgment. He scored 20 in ten minutes before Creed had hit a single. The latter scored three and then Berendsen caught him behind the wicket. Smyrke replaced Creed, but had only scoredfour when he skied one to the deep field. Hindmarsh saw the first change of bowling, Gibbes relieving .Findlay. In 35 minutes' play 50 went up, Board being responsible for over 40. The latter shortly after himself passed -50. Grace then relieved Saunders. Hindmarsh twice hit liim to the boundary and then played too late to a ball of good length and was clean bowled. Blamires was in next and saw several changes of bowling. Grace recorded the first maiden over. After 70 minutes' play Blamires scored the hundredth rim with a single past cover point. Then. Berendsen, standing well back, caught him behind the wickets. O'Brien joined Board, the hitter's score standing at 82. Up till now Board had played excellent cricket with practically no mistakes. It was his first mistake that caused his dismissal. Findlay sent down a ball of moderate pace breaking from the off; Board hesitated, played too late and turned the ball on to his middle stump. His score of 82 was made in an hour and 35 minutes. Fulton next went in and made a good stand. Gibbes took O'Brien's wicket with a yorker. The bowlers were now changed* frequently. Fulton had scored 42 when he cut Blamires through the slips to Patrick. Hawke's Bay's innings lasted three hours and forty minutes.

Wellington opened with Beechy and Phillips, and the start was disastrous. Fairey and Fulton commenced the bowling and in a few minutes Beechy was taken with a straight ball. Blamires started to hit fours and Phillips started also, but was given out lbw. When play stopped at 6.30 Creed had bowled Blamires for 28. On Saturday night rain commenced to fall and it came down in torrents all through the night, making the wicket'rather heavy for to-day's play. The scores are as follows: HAWKE'S BAY—lst Innings. J.
