WELLINGTON TRAMWAY TROUBLES.
(Pee Pbess Association.) Wellington, December 21. "From evidence received from various sources I regret to say that there is undoubtedly a considerable amount of malpractice with regard to ticket sales at present carried on by certain conductors who manage so that the irregularity is most difficult of detection." These remarks from Mr Stuart Richardson's (the city electrical engineer) report on the case of Inspector Fuller, which was before the City Council on Tuesday evenin" have excited bitter resentment on the' part of the different tramway employees. An indignation meeting was held by the men at the Newtown sheds last night, and it was resolved to ask Mr Richardson to withdraw them. This was confirmed by a meeting of the night shift men this morning, and a_ deputation was accordingly appointed to wait on the citv electrical engineer this afternoon and ask for an explanation or withdrawal. . _. , When the deputation met Mr iticnardson and stated the nature of its mission the electrical engineer made tno following reply :-"I have in my possession at least 50 instances of faked tickets that I have quite recently obtained I have not charged anyone at present in the service with malpractice, but I do say and contend strongly that the proof in my possession warrants the statement that I made in a confidential communication to the Tramwajs Committee, and. I am not m any wnj answerable for the publication of that confidential communication. I do not charge the conductors at present in the tramwavs with malpractice, and I welcome this opportunity of saying so.
