MAHENO SCHOOL. The Maheno School held their annual break-up on the 20th instant. After the prizes liad been distributed (of which a list was published yesterday), Mr Nicolson. the headmaster, and Miss Allan and Miss Wilson said good-bye to the children, as the New Year would see Mr Rodger as head and the appointment of an assistant in place of the pupil teachers. Mr Nicolson, in a few words, thanked the children for their attention to his instructions during the past three and a-half years while under his care. Mr Nicolson has been appointed senior teacher to the Otago Board. While in charge of the Maheno School Mr Nicolson has had excellent results. Of 18 pupils sent forward for proficiency examinations all passed. The Committee and the parents of the cliildren maymuch regret his departure, but as he is improving his position he has the good wishes of all with whom he came in contact. The function ended by the children giving three cheers for their departing master. On account of the inclement weather, the school picnic will not be held until Easter.
MORVEN. The annual prize-giving took place on Thursday afternoon in the presence of a few of the parents. The children sang two verses of ''God Save the King," Misses L. Welbvood and M. Benson sang solos, while a chorus and part song were very well given by the IV., V., and VI. Standards (boys and girls). Mr Hay, Chairman of the School Com-
mittee, in introducing Mr Lindsay (a member of the South Canterbury Education Board), said he was very pleased to have Mr Lindsay present, amongst them on the occasion.
Mr Lindsay replied that he was very pleased to be there to listen to the singing, which had been quite a treat. He was also pleased to be able to congratulate them on having such a good teaching staff, as Morven School was one of the most efficient schools under the South Canterbury Education Board. It gratified him to see the keen interest shown by the School Committee in the matter of improvements about the school grounds. He spoke a kindly word to the boys and girls, some of whom would not be returning to school after the holidays, and said he hoped that the good advice given at school would have a lasting effect on them, and that, even if they were not able to gain their full desires, they would always do their best. The annual break-up and distribution of prizes in connection with the above school took place in the hall on "Wednesday evening, when, notwithstanding the verv threatening appearance of the weather, there was a good attendance of the parents and friends of the children.
