SCHOOL VACATIONS.

OAMARF SOUTH. The annual distribution of prizes at Oainaru South School took place yesterday. lii the afternoon theorizes in the infant.--' department and in Standards I. and 11. were distributed to the winners by the Chairman of the School Committee (Mr Lucas; and the Headmaster, in tlio gymnasium. There was a large attendance of parents, and much enthusiasm prevailed. In the evening the hall wa.s taxed to its utmost capaciiv. when the prizes to the higher standards (111., IV., V., and VI.) were presented bv Mrs Lucas and Mrs Aid red.

Mr Lucas cxpre--ed Ids sense of the privilege he enjoyed in prc-iding. He thanked all those who had voluntarily contributed to th<- prize list for' their liberality. He telt sun- that the prizes would be treasured "by those who got them, and that in years to come they would look hack with pride and pleasure to this distribution. Referring to those who had been examined for the proficiency certificate. Mr Lucas said that the' teachers should feel justly proud of the results. Out of 22 children 20 had gained the proficiency certificate, one obtained a competency certificate, and only one failed. The two latter pupils had gone up from the Fifth Standard; so that really in the Sixth Standard the percentage of passes was 100 per cent. —(Applause.) Mr Lucas spoke word of encouragement to those who had failed and urged them to greater effort in the future. He also referred to the generosity of the donor of the medals for various standards, and felt sure that. a hearty ; vote of thanks would be accorded for the gift.— (Applause.) Rev. W. Wright alluded to the pleasure it afforded him to.give the Scripture lessons at the school. He looked forward to the time when they would have the New South Wales system of religious instruction, which had been so marked a success that in the schools in'-'.New; South Wales the absent-pupils from the Bible lessons were less than 1 per cent. The speaker congratulated Miss Phyllis ,Duncan ; bn her ' appointment to Napier Girls' High SchooL. and looked forward to the possibility of welcoming her 3 back as lady principal of Waitaki Girls' High' School.—(Applause.) He likewise complimented

Miss Coughlan and : the other, members of the teaching staff who had done such splendid work throughout. the . year. In conclusion, the speaker urged the pupils to bo enthusiastic in : their "work both at school and in the years thereafter, and he wished the teachers, parents, and children a very fine holiday indeed, and all bladings in the years to come,—(Applause.) Mr Lucas expressed the hope that in the event of pupils who' had gained proficiency certificates not being able to go to the High School, they would go to the Technical School, where excellent work was- being done. He hoped that the parents present would endeavor' to take advantage of either the one or the other.

Rev.. J. D. Russell, who arrived late, said'that in coming* up the" room'he noticed two kinds of faces, which reminded him- of "those mirrors seeii'insome of the bigger towns —you looked in one and you nad a very long face: then you looked in another and you had a very- broad face.—^Laughter .) He saw both long and broad faces in the room, and he assumed that the_ long faces belonged to those who got no prizes and the broad ones to those who did. He counselled those with the broad smiling faces to retain them, not: only now,'ljut through life, and not only to have pleasure themselves, but to give pleasure to others too. As to those with.the long faces: he drew their attention to the attitude of' Sir Joseph Ward, who 'took his beating with a smiling face, who, in fact, did not know, or would not recognise, that. he was beaten at. all. That was the way to meet defeat. —(Applause.) Let the defeated pupils remember that the prizewinners were not always the most successful in after life. Some children were brilliant,. while others were plod'ders,' and'the plodders often succeeded best in the long run. —(Applause.) He' reminded them of the old maxim-—. '"Try, try, try again."' 'ln fine, the speaker exp/essed delight at the privilege of speaking a few words to the children.—(Applause.) Mr Aldred congratulated the prizewinners,- and commiserated those who had been unsuccessful. He also congratulated the children on their general good conduct during the year, and he thanked, very heartily, the liberality of those who'contributed to the' prize fund. He paid a high compliment to ' theteachers, and especially Mr ,AV. Cron, the first' assistant.' If it" were not for Mr Cron the pupils could not possibly have done what they did. He wished

on 6 and all a happy Christmas and Ne.w Year, and admonished the pupils that he would expect them to work hard when they came back. ' Votes of thanks were passed to the speakers, the ladies who presented the prizes, the ministers who gave the Scripture lessons, the donors of the prizes, and the teachers, and "a very pleasant function ended with the singing of the National Anthem.
