THE MERINO DISAPPEARS.
THE CULT OF THE CROSSBRED. [By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.] (Per Press Association.) Received June 30, at 7.20 p.m. Sydney, Juno 30. At the official luncheon at the sheep show, Sir Francis Suttor referred to the decrease of merinos. With the smaller areas of land available, he said, the man on the land was going in for crossbreds, for which lie could more readily get a market, and which paid better all over. In Australia, New Zealand, and South America crossbreds were increasing at the expense of the merinos. In 1901 there were 39,000,000 merinos and 3,000,000 crossbreds in New South Wales; now there were 41,000,000 merinos and 5,000,000 crossbreds.
