(Peb Pbess, Association.) Christchurch, June 2.
The* wheat market is very quiet, there being bat littl'e ' offering, and buyers are not' very keen in their enquiries for it. Tliey - are not offering more than 3s 3d at country .stations, and few farmers-.who: are holding care to sell at this figure'.. • The oats ; market is very firm,' with oiily odd lines coming forward. Most of the business passing is therefore between merchants.
Chaff is also steady in price, 85s at stations being the rilling figure. Potatoes are ratlior easier;-buyers being indifferent about making purchases, even..if they could get supplies, at (ios at country stations, but growers are holding out for more money now that the potatoes are in pit. The lower quotations from the south and the reluctance of buyers in the North Island to make forward contracts at present is keeping business quiet.
DUNEDIN MARKETS. (Otago; Daily Times.) Owing to the almost' entire absence of business it is not easy to report exactly as to what are the actual values ruling for wheat. Probably 3s 4d to 3s 4id for red sorts and 3s 6d for velvet, ex store, Dunedin, would be very near the mark for good'milling wheat. A very prime line of velvet for. shipment to the North Island was disposed of during the week at 3s'6.Vd, "ex store. In the vicinity of stations north .of■ Oamaru holders are asking 3s 4d, on trucks, for Tuscan, and 3s 5d for velvet ; but as no actual sales are reported at these figures it may-be said that the values are merely nominal. The tariff of the Flourmillers' Association for flour and other lines is as follows:—Flour: Sacks, £9 ss; 1001b bags,. £9. 15s; 501b bags, £10;, 251b bigs, £lO os. Oatmeal, £l3 10s per ton. Pearl barley, £l4 per ton. Bran, £4 15s-per ton. Pollard, £6 per ton. There is still a strong market for oats. Farmers .are not offering their oats, ai]d merchants consequently are finding it difficult to secure lots at what they consider - a reasonable price to enable them to do business with the North Island. There is not much demand for prompt shipment, but fair inquiries for forward' delivery. Agents, however, are not , keen on this latter class of business. A grade Gartons have been sold at 2s 6i<f to 2s 7d, f.0.b., s.i., while B Gartons are ruling at 2s SWI to 2s fid, and A sparrows up to 2s 6d. . Consignments of chaff are still arriving freely, and lower prices have been accepted to effect sales ex truck. Stocks in store are very, heavy'. The demand is confined to prime samples, medium and inferior receiving little attention from buyers. • , " ' ' • • There has been rather more inquiry during the last few days for potatoes, but, this notwithstanding, prices, show, no improvement. Growers are firm holders. , ' . , The oaten and wheaten straw- market is fully supplied, and prices have slightly receded. There is a good demand for onions. - • The egg market has not been too brisk during the week, and prices have, eased. Preserved are in over-supply. ■ ■ Supplies of dairy butter are light, and consignments are readily placed on arrival. . _ ...
