AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY.

PRESENTATION OF DEGREES. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, June 2. The presentation of New Zealand University degrees to graduates resident in the Auckland district took place this afternoon." In a spirited chorus the students declared their indifference to the authoritative resolution which forbade them to be disorderly, and heartily indulged in expressions of their good spirits in the manner that seemed to them most appropiate. " ' The Chancellor of the University (Sir Robert Stout) presided, arid the Governor . arid Lady Islington were present. Sir Robert Stout congratulated Auckland University College on the fact that during the year miiny distinctions had been conferred upon its students. He referred, "to the Rhodes scholarship, awarded to Mr A. G. Marshall. An unusual distinction had been gained for the college by Mr Alan Wallace, who had won three senior scholarships in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and in chemistry.—(Applause.) Having acknowledged the value of the education instilled by what was known in America as "fclio university of knocks." Sir Robert. Stout said: the race could not be. developed if mental training was neglected. He admitted the great- need of research. Agriculture, stock-breeding anthropology, and many other subjects offered themselves for investigation. More, important than the results of research was tho encouragement of a scientific spirit that would inspire asearch after truth that would allow nothing to interfere with it. Intelligence, knowledge, and skill must be backed up by interest and will, and by all the physical and moral faculties that go to the making of manhood, and in that yajv success would be assured. —(Applause.) The Chancellor then conferred 1 the degrees won.
