WAIMATE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of the above was held last evening. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr N. Francis), Councillors Inkster, Miller, Manchester, Jones, Cox, Atwill, Collett, and Sanders. The District Health Officer wrote that in his opinion the Borough having handed over its powers under the Health Act to the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, it was now relieved of any liability in regard to the establishment "of a public morgue other than through its levy to the Board. As to the suitability or otherwise of the present morgue, he would be pleased to make an inspection on his next visit to Waimate. —Resolved to forward a copy o'f the letter to the Hospital Committee, with the intimation that under the circumstances the Borough could not take any further action. The Rev. C. Penny, applied for a license for ,the Wesleyan School room for the purpose of a lecture on the China Inland' Mission .—Granted, no fee to be charged. The Levels County Council notified the holding of a conference on the 20th May next to consider the question of auctioneers' licenses and the destruction of small birds.—Held over for the next Council to consider. Councillor Sanders reported that settings of different chimes had been received from the Town Clerks of Dunedin, Oamaru, arid Askburton. He had consulted others in regard to the matter, and the verdict placed Dunedin first, Oamaru second, and Asbburton third. —It was resolved to leave the matter in the hands of the Mayor and Councillor Sanders, with power to act. Formal" correspondence was received and dealt with. A vote of thanks was passed to Air J. Black for kindly placing bis car at the disposal of the Council on the occasion of the visit of the Hon. T. Mackenzie-' to Waimate the previous week. His Worship took occasion, as this was the last meeting of the present Council, to thank Councillors for their assistance during the past two years, and he hoped to see them all returned on the morrow. As good a Council might be returned, but he felt sure that a better Council could not be elected. All Councillors thanked the Mayor, and congratulated him upon Ins re-elec-Councillors Inkster, Sanders, arid Manchester, as Chairmen of Committees, each spoke very highly of the ability of the Town Clerk (Mr C. Dash), and of the great assistance always rendered Councillors by their chief ottiCe Accounts amounting to £24 0s lOd were passed for payment.
