NOTES.
The Kaiapoi, from Timaru, arrived atl Oatnaru at 6 o'clock yesterday morning. She brought to land 300 tons of coal and 25,000 feet of timber, and will I sail to-night, after completing -discharge, for Greymouth direct. ] The Pnkaki, from Westporfc, put in anappearance at noon to-day. She "will; land 200 tons of coal, sailing this evening for Dnnedin. The Hanroto, which is at present laid up at Port Chalmers, will relieve the. Tarawera in the East Coast service ou • the 24th inst., to enable the latter vessel to be docked for survey and over-, haul. The Hauroto will be overhauled before going into commission. The French tramp Breiz Izel, which is under charter to the Vacuum Oil Company, left New York on February 21sfc for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. She hasa full cargo of case oils for the Dominion.. Her arrival may be looked forward to about ihe middle of May. Captain Charles _ Malcolm Renaufc, who has been appointed by Cabinet to the-position of Assistant-Superintendent of Mercantile Marine at Auckland, is at present in command of' the cargo steamer Kaiapoi, and has been about 11 years in the service of the Union Steam Ship Company. He is a native of England, and served his apprenticeship in the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's sailing ships. Captain Rcnaut is one of the Union Company's younger masters, and has a good record.
