EVENING CONTINUATION CLASSES.
(PEE PBESS-iAsBOCIATION.) Auckland, January 16. The -ower. given under the Act of last session to school committees to establish continuation classes, and to enforce-the attendance of children from 14 to 17 years of age,-is regarded by Mr C. Gr. Parr, chairman of the Auckland Education Board, as merely shelvresponsibility. "Tho Act," said'Mr Parr to a Herald representative on "Saturday,' "is merely playing with the question. The matter is so important that instead of shelving the responsibility in this connection by leaving it to the whim. of the local school committees, the department!and, the board 'should ,take itiri hand. New: South AA 7 ales is leading us in this. There th e : Labor' Government proposes to take the matter in hand itself, and' niako.atteridanbe at continuation classes 'compulsory;. 'Meantime, I-am pleased to see that one or two of the committees; are taking the-question up, -hut these cases are exceptional.. Myvpoint. is that the Legislature should have plainly-' instructed the department -by the Act of last year to establish these .continuation classes throughout the .whole Dominion, and not to leave it to inere chance."
