The Board met at Government House, tlie personnel being, as follows: His Excellency the Governor (in his private capacity), Sir Robert Stout, Mr Justice Cooper, and Professors H. 13. Kirk (Victoria College), A. Pi W. Thomas (Aucki land University College), Galbott (Canterbury College), and P. Marshall (Dunedin University). _ . Mr Marshall is -22 years of age, was born in Northern Wairoa is the..son of the R'ev. Mr Marshall, Methodist minister, now stationed at Otautau, in Southland. He is :an all-round man, just such a one as the founder of the scholarship wished to benefit. Mr Marshall; has had a most successful career both as a scholar and an athlete. In his application to the Board Mr Marshall stated that he has followed through the New Zealand course of education from-the primary school to university, supporting himself entirely from the age of 16 .years by means of scholarships and demonstratorships, and winning the final degree of M.A. with first-class honors in mathematics, and mathematical .physics. •*.. The Auckland' University Professor of •Mathematics:, says'of Marshall: "His work has : impressed me, particularly by its extreme thoroughness and accuracy. Though .1 have: had several students who have, been, very successful in my subject, I " have ( had none .with minds more 'severely, logical and' penetrating. ' Other .professors. , under whom Mr Marshall; studied at VAucklanii wrote of hi'm hi' a; similar complimentary strain, reference being made to his mental alertness, quite unusual ability, general high cliafacter,: and engaging personality.
