It is hardly necessary to state that with the one condition of fine w-eatlier granted, the twenty-seventh annual sports ' of. the Wait.aki Boys' High School were as successful as they usually are. The sports'were-lield yesterday afternoon ;oii the _AV and P. Association's Slibwgro.vinds, sand-' .wei'es watched of ladies 'iiJid; gentlemen, who- t6'ok ; : tlieir:iease'.i.n this grandstand or strolled,'-.ajjoufc- .enclosure. I'he masters, and : bojjs ;of Waitaki High School invariably pr.qve good hosts,' and yesterday afternoon there was no exception to The scli'ool brass band,' Under MJr'-.Gv Sherwin, played a' number of selections very pleasingly, aiid afternoon tea, '.with seasonable dainties, was.handed round by the boys. The sports themselves were all that school sports should be. .Entries' were large and competition was •keen, in. all events the boys evincing a desire to "play the game," and, though beaten, finish the race. "-It is this, the true spirit of sport, which makes'school competitions to be so'.. \i'e-ll contested and so enjoyable to watch. In most of the races the times registered'were well down to.the standard and in some cases considerably lower. Considering the unprepared state of the track, this shows that' there has been long and .arduous' training on the part of the young athletes. Among the handsome trophies competed for during the afternoon was a cup presented by Mr Walcott Wood, of Christchurch, and allocated as a swimming challenge cup. The first name to be engraved on it will be I that of H. S. Harlcy. Other cups were

presented by Messrs L. B. Jordan, S. J. Davys, and J. E. Hood. The cup for the senior championship was won by R. M'Gimpsey with 32 points, A. E. Scantlebury being second with 24, and L. Beauchamp third with 16. The junior championship was carried off by 0. Orr with 24 points, L. Marshall with 20 points to his credit taking second place.
