Mrs Hamilton, widow of the Rev. George Hamilton, died at Kirkcudbright recently at the age of 106. She had been a widow for over seventy years.
The staff of the North Otago Times foregathered on Saturday afternoon for the purpose of making a presentation to Miss Olive Moss, of the clerical staff, who is leaving to take up a position on the staff of the Oamaru Man. Mr J. Robertson, in presenting Miss Moss with a self-filling fountain pen, spoke of the regret felt at the loss of her services, and paid her a well-deserved compliment for the faithful and conscientious manner in which she had carried out her duties. Mr Robertson also stated that he had been asked by the proprietors to express the firm's appreciation of Miss-; Moss's work, and also handed lier, on their behalf, a slight recognition of her services. Miss Moss thanked the staff for their evidence of goodwill and' for the uniform kindness she had always received at their hands. The Prime Minister, with his Majesty's approval, the other day requested Field-Marshal Lord Kitchener to become a member of the Committed of Imperial Defence. Since his return to England, Lord Kitchener has been living the life 'of an English country gentleman. He has taken a (ino old' house near Canterbury, where lie proposes to reside in future. Miss Beatrice Harrison, tho young English violincellist who has just won the Mendelssohn prize at Berlin, is tho first foreigner to gain that distinction. The competition is open to German students of both sexes, and also to foreigners studying in Germany. Sir Vezoy Strong, who will bo tho first Lord Mayor of London in the new reign, is an abstainer.
