Field Steward: Mr Wm. Souter. : "■

The outstanding feature of the thirtieth annual show of the "Waihemo Agricultural and Pastoral Association, held yesterday at Palmerston. was the patronage accorded the exhibition by the people of the district. The gate takings, .£54 os, showed that the attendance constituted a record. The previous best was in 1908, when the takings amounted to £o2 17s. Regrettable, however, was the falling away in the number of entries, and especially in the .sheep and cattle classes. Hitherto the sheep classes at Palmerston have been well filled, and that too with animals that had distinguished ■ themselves at the larger shows; but the absence this year of representatives from the studs "of such breeders as Messrs David and John Ross and of Mr William Nicolson not only made the entry list much smaller, but robbed the show of much interesting competition as well. Very little fault, however, if indeed any, could be found .with the quality of'the exhibits; indeed, the opinions of the judges confirm the statement that there was all-round general excellence. The show was well managed, considering the. drawbacks the officials have to contend with owing to the post entry policy of the Committee and the consequent absence of a printed programme. Each of the. officials carried out his allotted task with ungrudging willingness, and in this respect it is unnecessary to individualise further than to record the appreciation of the press for the assistance rendered by the secretary, Mr Wm. M'Gregor. The Palmerston Band attended, and discoursed a programme of music that was much appreciated. Apologies for absence were received from the Hon. Thos. Mackenzie, the Hon. T. V. Duncan, aiul Mr E. H. Clark, M.l', for the district. Ayrshires claimed the bulk of the cattle exhibits, the competition being between Jfr A. Gillies and the Executors of the late P. Walker. The former secured both the championships, with Prince Alberl in the male section and Reta HI. in the female. Tn the male sections other than that which secured for Mr Gillies the championship, P. Walker's Executors obtained the first awards. There was only one entry in the Shorthorn classes—Mr Aubrey's bull, while in the Polled Angus classes there were only two, a bull and a cow from Mount Royal. There were some interesting lings of draught horses, and there were also some stiff competitions. Mr H. Saunders' Scottish Crown added to his list of successes this season bv winning in his class and securing the championship. and further by annexing the championship ribbon as the best type of draught horse in the show irrespective of age or sex. Breeders in the female sections found themselves up against a tough proposition, in the shape of a recent importation by Mr T. Mnir, of Palmerston. This was Kerstie Cameron, a Silver Plate —Baron Princess mare. Kerstie Cameron was only landed five weeks ago. She comes to ns with an unbeaten record after having been shown several times at Home, and yesterday justified Mr Muirs' selection by winning for him the championship in addition to the first prize ticket in her class. Amongst the North Otago winners whose names appear in the nrizclist are Mr Geo. Harvey, Mr J. O'Brien and Mr A. Dalgleish. The latter. while he failed to secure first place with his mare, scored heavily in a number of classes, as a reference to the prize-list will show. He secured the first prize for mare and two of her progeny with Primrose, attended by a Garthland yearling and a two-year-old Royal Derby. There is usually a large entry of light horses and hacks at Palmerston, and this year was no exception. Altogether they constituted classes which would not have discredited a more pretentious show. What the sheep classes lacked in, quantity tliey made up for in quality.', Corriedales and Merinos were brought into close competition by the Douglas Tmstees, who filled all the classes except two, in one of which they were opposed bv Mr John M'Kenzie, and in the'other Mr A. S. Orbell was the only exhibitor. The merino is a dying breed, the place of which is being filled by the Corriedale, which will thrive under similar conditions to that of the merino, has a better fleece, and is also a better mutton sheep. There were some fair specimens of the popular Border Leicester type, but a great lack or competition owing to the causes previously mentioned. The prize-list is as follows: — CATTLE. —Shorthorns. — Judges:' Messrs J. Nimmo (Mosgiel) and ; J. R. Mitchell (Weston). Bull, 3 years and upwards (1 entry)—, . W.
